A view of Great Salt Lake City places the viewer at the edge of a settlement in the Salt Lake Valley, with the Wasatch Mountains rising to the east. Latter-day Saint pioneers led by Brigham Young founded the city in 1847 on a grid of streets laid out around a central temple block, and its growth was shaped by the nearby lake, whose salty water gave the city its name. The record gives no date or maker, and the name on the shelflist card is unverified, so the print is best read as a general picture of the city and its setting.
