Currier & Ives published this color lithograph around 1872, and its subject pairs two things that defined the western plains at the time: grass fires and the railroads crossing them. Prairie fires could race across dry grassland faster than a person could run, threatening settlers, livestock and the new rail lines that were pushing west after the Civil War. Currier & Ives sold such scenes widely to eastern buyers, so the print offers a view of frontier danger as it was packaged for a national audience.
