This lithograph takes its title from horse racing, with "the great race" and "the Western stakes" framing a contest for a prize. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that published it around 1870, sold many prints that used sporting language to comment on public affairs, and this one belongs to its run of political cartoons from the 1870s. The period was shaped by the completed transcontinental railroad and the postwar push to settle and claim lands west of the Mississippi. Viewers should look closely at the figures and details, since the title alone suggests a satirical reading of competition over western prospects.
