Black Rock, a dark outcrop standing on the shore of the Great Salt Lake, gives this stereograph its subject, and the card belongs to a series titled *Utah Scenery*. Salt Lake City studio Savage & Ottinger issued the view in the years between 1861 and 1870, when American audiences were eager for images of the West and the Mormon settlements. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical prints fuse into a single image with depth, so the rock and the surrounding water and shore seem to stand out in three dimensions.
