This photograph captures Dorothy Dandridge at the moment her title marks as her dramatic debut, a shift from the singing and nightclub work that first brought her attention. Dandridge had built her reputation as a vocalist and performer before moving into acting, where she faced the limited roles available to Black actresses in the mid-twentieth century. Her later film work, especially her starring role in *Carmen Jones* (1954), earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination, the first for a Black woman in that category. Looking at the picture, note how the staging and expression reflect the stage presence she brought from music into drama.
