Dorothy Dandridge is caught mid-performance in this 1955 photograph, taken during one of her nightclub appearances in Las Vegas. By the mid-1950s she had become one of the first Black women to receive major Hollywood attention, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in Carmen Jones (1954). Las Vegas showrooms of that era were glamorous and often segregated in practice, so her headlining engagements there marked a notable step for a performer of her background. The photograph captures the stage presence that made her one of the most celebrated entertainers of the decade.
