Coffins lined up beside a common grave in Ireland mark the aftermath of the Lusitania, the British passenger liner torpedoed by a German U-boat off the south coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915. Bodies recovered from the sea were brought ashore near Queenstown (now Cobh), where many of the dead were laid to rest in mass graves as the number of victims overwhelmed local arrangements. Over a thousand people died in the sinking, and the scene helped turn American public opinion against Germany's submarine campaign. The newspaper photographers who recorded such scenes were documenting a disaster whose toll shocked both sides of the Atlantic.
