Seminary Ridge, west of town, is the setting here: the Lutheran Theological Seminary, whose buildings became a hospital during and after the fighting of July 1863. Wounded men from both armies were brought there in the days that followed, and its rooms and halls filled with the sick and dying as surgeons worked through the crowded wards. Tipton & Myers, a Gettysburg firm, issued the card between 1868 and 1880 as part of its numbered stereoscopic series, No. 574. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images merged into a single three-dimensional scene, which made such cards popular with visitors who wanted a closer look at the battlefield's landmarks.
