This pencil sketch on long strip of orange-tan paper shows the left side of the fighting at Bentonville, North Carolina, where Confederate forces under Joseph E. Johnston attacked Union troops on March 19, 1865. Handwritten notes inside the drawing mark a ravine above the front of the guns and an open field beyond, so the artist was recording the terrain as well as the action. Its earlier catalog number links it to Alfred Waud, a battlefield artist whose quick field sketches were sent north to be engraved for illustrated newspapers. The drawing documents the last major battle of Sherman's Carolinas Campaign, fought as the war was nearing its end.
