Ten members of Congress crowd together in this 1926 photograph, all holding forks over pie in what appears to be a Washington, D.C., setting. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, whose studio documented officials and news in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s. Among those pictured is Edith Nourse Rogers, a Massachusetts Republican who had entered the House of Representatives the previous year and went on to serve there for decades. The staged lightheartedness reflects how press photographers of the era looked for human-interest moments beyond formal group portraits.
