On Margin" takes its title from the practice of buying stock with borrowed money, a habit that turned ruinous once share prices fell. James Montgomery Flagg, best known for his Uncle Sam recruiting poster, drew this commentary cartoon for a periodical published in November 1929, a few weeks after the October crash. Its contrast is the point: anxious readers hunch over the financial pages while one man on the telephone looks pleased, a reminder that the same market could ruin one investor and seem to reward another.
