The Time Honored Guest" takes its title from a phrase that suggests a familiar, long-welcomed visitor, and the subject heading places its eating-and-drinking scene in the 1830s and 1840s. The image is an etching by James Dobie after a painting by William Dendy Sadler, who was known for sentimental genre scenes of older English life. Published in London in 1907 by the dealers L.H. Lefèvre & Son, it belongs to the early twentieth-century vogue for reproductive etchings, which translated oil paintings into fine line and tone for a wide middle-class market. The print shows how that period's taste looked back on the earlier nineteenth century as a more leisurely, hearty age.
