This halftone reproduction shows Clara Barton, the nurse who later founded the American Red Cross, in a portrait taken by Brady's studio during the Civil War. Barton spent the war delivering supplies and tending wounded soldiers on battlefields and in field hospitals, and her work gave her wide public recognition. The print was made between about 1890 and 1910, long after the original photograph, when halftone printing allowed newspapers and books to reproduce photographs in quantity. Its later date shows how the image of a wartime figure was kept in circulation as Barton's reputation grew.
