John Charles Frémont, the army explorer and Civil War major general, is the subject here, and the record credits the image as an engraving by J.C. Buttre made after a photograph by Mathew Brady. That combination was common in the decades after the war, when photographs served as the model for engraved portraits that could be printed in books, magazines and newspapers. Frémont had earned the nickname "Pathfinder" for his mapping expeditions across the West in the 1840s, and he later commanded in Missouri and ran for president in 1856 as the first Republican candidate. Portraits like this one helped keep his public image alive long after his military service ended.
