This engraving stands apart from many Henry Clay portraits because it is copied from a bust, not drawn from life. The engraver G. Parker worked from a sculpted head by E. Brackett, turning three-dimensional form into the lines of a plate that could be printed in multiple copies. Clay, a Kentucky lawyer who served as Speaker of the House and led the Whig Party, was one of the most recognizable public men of his time, and his likeness circulated widely in prints like this one. The record dates it only to between 1830 and 1870, a period when engraved portraits of statesmen were a common way to show political loyalty in homes and public rooms.
