This engraving turns a photograph from Brady's New York studio into a printed portrait of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. J.C. McRae cut the plate, and T. Kelly published it in New York around 1867, two years after Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Before halftone printing was common, engravers like McRae were how photographic likenesses reached print, so the sheet shows both a wartime figure and the way his image circulated. Lee spent his last years as president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia.
