Henry Percy, ninth Earl of Northumberland, appears here in a likeness that J. Cochran engraved from an original by Anthony van Dyck. Contemporaries called Percy the "Wizard Earl" for his interest in astronomy, mathematics and chemistry, and he supported scientists and kept a private laboratory. He also spent years in the Tower of London after the Gunpowder Plot, because his cousin Thomas Percy had been involved. This 1831 London engraving, published by Harding & Lepard, carries Van Dyck's composition to later viewers.
