Benjamin West's *Christ Rejected* depicts Christ at his trial, the moment of rejection described in the Gospels. West was an American-born painter who spent most of his career in London and led the Royal Academy, and he was known for large history paintings on biblical subjects. This print reproduces his original as a mezzotint by John Sartain, a London-born engraver who worked in Philadelphia, and it was published there by Bradley & Co. in 1870. Mezzotint, made by working a roughened copper plate, gives scenes like this one a soft, deep tonal range.
