Few of Roger Fenton's Crimean portraits show a senior British commander as plainly as this one shows Lieutenant-General Sir John Lysaght Pennefather, an officer who served in the Crimea during the war of 1853 to 1856. Fenton arrived there in 1855 with a large mobile darkroom and photographed officers, soldiers, and the camp around Sevastopol. This print is a salted paper print, a process that was still common in the mid-1850s before albumen and collodion prints became dominant. Its sober, direct pose reflects the formal conventions of military portraiture of the period.
