Mayor John F. Hylan of New York City is the figure at the center of this 1924 drawing, and the caption supplies the joke: a scolding wife tells him to stop smoking in the parlor and "act like a governor," a title he never held. Hylan, who led the city from 1918 to 1925, had won office with support from William Randolph Hearst, who is also named among the subjects, and the cartoon pokes at the mayor's public dignity through a domestic scene. It appeared in the New York World on July 31, 1924. The drawing is ink over pencil on layered paper, and its lines show the quick, hand-finished work typical of daily newspaper political cartoons of the period.
