The title, which breaks off at "Mrs.," points to the comic strip *Bringing Up Father*, and the wife character Maggie appears to be the focus. George McManus created the strip, which began in 1913 in Hearst newspapers and ran for decades. It followed Jiggs, a working-class Irish-American bricklayer who suddenly comes into money, and Maggie, who pushes the family toward high society while Jiggs keeps returning to his old habits. The comedy turns on class, marriage, and the new fortunes of the early twentieth century, and the strip became one of the most widely read features of its time.
