A lithograph from Hamilton, Ontario, asks passersby directly, "Are you breaking the law?" and answers that patriotic Canadians will not hoard food. Howell Lithographing printed it sometime between 1914 and 1918, when the Allied war effort made food supplies a matter of national concern. Canadian authorities encouraged households and merchants to buy only what they needed, so that staples would remain available for soldiers and for allies overseas. The poster's blunt, almost accusatory wording reflects how wartime appeals sought to turn ordinary shopping into a question of loyalty.
