Its caption asks Americans to eat less wheat, meat, fats, and sugar so that food could still be shipped overseas, with Belgium as the cause. The poster is one of a numbered series issued by the United States Food Administration, the wartime agency led by Herbert Hoover to manage American food supplies. Belgium had been under German occupation since 1914, and Hoover's Commission for Relief in Belgium had kept millions of people fed through the war with American donations and shipments. The poster ties that effort to home-front rationing, presenting restraint at the dinner table as a direct form of help.
