Adolph Treidler's lithograph pairs a display of flags with slogans that link patriotism to the kitchen table: "Beat Germany," "Support every flag that opposes Prussianism," and "Eat less of the food fighters need." Printed in Chicago by Edwards & Deutsch around 1918, it was issued under the United States Food Administration, the wartime agency headed by Herbert Hoover to encourage conservation of wheat, meat, and sugar for the Allied armies. The poster shows how the government asked ordinary Americans to take part in the war effort by cutting back at home, and how the call to sacrifice was framed as a form of loyalty.
