Lead with what sets this poster apart: its slogan pairs a blood donation appeal with a call to save food, a contrast the title spells out in its own words, "Blood or bread." Issued in 1917 by the United States Food Administration, the poster was part of the wartime campaign led by Herbert Hoover to get American households to cut waste so that grain and other supplies could reach Allied troops and civilians in Europe. The "Raleigh" credit points to the illustrator Henry Raleigh, whose bold color lithographs were widely reproduced for federal food programs. Its quotation from the poet John Greenleaf Whittier adds a moral weight to the appeal.
