Edward Penfield's 1918 poster asks Americans to help the women of France by saving wheat, a plea aimed at households far from the front. French farms had lost many men to the war, so women were working the fields and needed support from abroad. The message tied the wartime effort to conserve wheat, promoted by the U.S. Food Administration under Herbert Hoover, to the food supply of Allied Europe. Penfield was one of the most admired American poster artists of his era, and his work shows how wartime propaganda linked everyday choices at home to the labor of women overseas.
