Frank Brangwyn, an Associate of the Royal Academy, designed this 1915 lithograph for the Belgian Allies Aid League, and its title makes the appeal plain: help, not sympathy, is what the displaced need to rebuild. The poster belongs to the wave of wartime fundraising that followed the German invasion of Belgium in August 1914, which sent a large number of refugees across the Channel to Britain. Its wording and the printed address for contributions show how such campaigns asked ordinary citizens to fund housing, furniture and fresh starts for families who had lost their homes.
