Frank Brangwyn, a leading British painter and an Associate of the Royal Academy, designed this lithograph as a plea to the public for the 1914 War Society. Its slogan, "Do your duty to our boys as they are doing theirs to you," asks civilians to support disabled men who had served in the First World War. The society's aim, as the text states, was to give each of them a fair chance at honourable independence in healthy rural surroundings. Britain faced a large number of wounded and disabled veterans, and charities and government schemes of the period often turned to land settlement and smallholdings as a way for them to earn a living. The poster's appeal for donations, "large or small," shows how much of that work depended on private money.
