Admiral Nelson's famous signal before the Battle of Trafalgar gives this poster its wording, and its subtitle, "1805-1915," draws the link openly. The message, "England expects that every man will do his duty," was flown in 1805, and here it is turned into a question for men weighing whether to enlist a century later. Issued by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in London in 1915, this color lithograph, numbered 101 in its series, is one of many posters that used national history and symbols to encourage volunteers in the early years of the First World War.
