Unlike the illustrated recruiting posters that dominate many collections, this one is pure text. It asks the public to lend £1 for 15s 6d and tells readers to go to the post office that day. The offer reflects Britain's need to finance a war that was costing far more than taxation alone could cover, so the government and its allies turned to ordinary people, with loans and savings schemes meant to draw small investors as well as wealthy ones. The poster was issued by the National Organising Committee and printed in color by David Allen & Sons of Harrow, one of the country's leading poster printers during the war.
