A text-only lithograph from 1917, this poster is less a picture than a list of instructions, and its three numbered "don'ts" make the case for national thrift. It was produced under the name of the National Organising Committee, a wartime body in Britain, and printed by David Allen & Sons of Harrow, a firm known for mass-producing posters during the First World War. The advice targets the comforts of the well-off: private motoring, new clothes, and domestic staff, all framed as ways to free money and labor for the war effort. Its plain wording and sober color show how the government and its allies appealed to civilians to make sacrifices at home.
