Few recruiting posters from the war rely on words alone, and this one has no picture, only a plain appeal to men who meant to enlist to do so before compulsion arrived. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee issued it in London in 1916, as Parliament was passing the Military Service Act that introduced conscription in Britain for the first time. The committee had been formed in 1915 to encourage voluntary enlistment, and the poster reflects the government's hope of filling the ranks before compulsion took effect. It was lithographed in color by David Allen & Sons of Harrow, a firm known for printing many of Britain's wartime posters.
