Addressed to the crowd rather than the marchers, this poster scolds the idle onlooker with the line "don't stay in the crowd and stare." The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee issued it in London in 1915, and Roberts & Leete printed the large color lithograph, one of many such posters that covered Britain's streets in the early years of the war. At that point the army depended on volunteers, so recruiting material like this tried to shame bystanders into joining the columns they were watching. The contrast between the marching soldiers and the spectators on the pavement makes the appeal clear.
