Addressed directly to "New Yorkers," this text-only lithograph names two local recruiting offices, one on East 23rd Street in Manhattan and one on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. Dated 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it urges men to enlist in the Navy to help make the world safe, a phrase that echoed President Woodrow Wilson's language about the war. Recruiting posters like this one relied on bold lettering and blunt calls to action, since they were pasted on storefronts and public walls to reach men going about their daily routines.
