This Boston recruiting poster asks men to "Keep the American flag on the seas" and to enlist in the Navy now, with a battleship in the design to make the appeal. It was drawn by Frank Vining Smith, printed in color by the Smith & Porter Press, and issued by the City of Boston Committee on Public Safety around 1917. That year the United States entered the First World War, and the Navy needed a rapid increase in sailors to crew its ships and escort convoys across the Atlantic. Local committees like this one produced posters to bring those recruiting drives into city streets and public places.
