Printed in 1917, this poster asks viewers to "Join the Navy" with a plain appeal to national duty. That was the year the United States entered the First World War, in April, and recruiters across the country were trying to fill the ranks quickly. The "Your Country Needs You" phrasing echoes the British Kitchener recruiting poster of 1914, which became one of the most widely copied slogans of the war. Offset lithography let designs like this one be printed in large runs at low cost, so they could be posted in public buildings and storefronts nationwide. The Navy, which was expanding its fleet and crews during the war, relied on such posters to draw volunteers.
