Unlike many recruiting posters of its time, this one names two specific offices where New Yorkers could enlist: 34 East 23rd Street in Manhattan and 115 Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. Dated to about 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, this text-only color lithograph opens with the blunt call "Wake up--New Yorkers!" and presents naval service as a civic duty. The Navy relied on posters like this one in the war's early months to fill its ranks quickly, and placing the addresses on the page made enlistment feel close to home.
