A 1917 Navy recruiting appeal reading "Help your country" reflects how the service sought volunteers after the United States entered the First World War that April. Posters like this were widely printed and displayed in post offices, storefronts and train stations, urging young men to enlist in the patriotic spirit of the moment. The Navy's wartime needs grew quickly as escort ships, minesweepers and transports were sent to European waters. The slogan is a plain call to duty, typical of the many recruiting campaigns the government ran during the war.
