A lifeboat crowded with sailors and survivors anchors this recruiting poster, with the command "Help your country stop this" printed beside it. The Welsh-born painter Frank Brangwyn, an Associate of the Royal Academy, designed it as a lithograph for the American Lithographic Company in New York in 1917. That year Germany's campaign of unrestricted submarine warfare was sinking Allied and neutral merchant ships in the Atlantic, and the United States entered the First World War in April. The poster's appeal ties enlistment to protecting shipping from those attacks, and its large scale was meant to catch the eye on city walls and in public spaces.
