Measuring about 156 by 200 centimeters, this is an unusually large recruiting poster, and its scale suits its message. British painter Frank Brangwyn, an Associate of the Royal Academy, designed it in 1917, when German submarine attacks on Atlantic shipping were straining Allied supply lines. Its subject, sailors handling lifeboats at sea, points to the dangers faced by merchant crews and invites men to join the Navy. Brangwyn's bold forms and heavy color reflect his long experience as a muralist.
