The headline "Make the world safe" echoes a phrase from President Woodrow Wilson's April 1917 war message to Congress, and the poster adds an appeal to enlist now and go with your friends. Printed in New York in 1917 by the Hegeman Print, it was issued by the Recruiting Committee of the Mayor's Committee on National Defense shortly after the United States entered the war. Arthur N. Edrop's lithograph reflects the wartime effort to fill the ranks, when many men preferred to join with neighbors and workmates.
