The poster's text calls the 69th Infantry "the famous Irish regiment," a New York National Guard unit whose roots ran back to the Civil War Irish Brigade and whose ranks were heavily Irish-American. The lithograph was printed in New York in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, when recruiters worked to fill units quickly. Its appeal to friends who would "go to the front together" reflects how much enlistment then depended on local loyalty, ethnic community, and neighborhood ties. The regiment later fought in France as part of the 42nd "Rainbow" Division.
