Many recruiting posters of 1915 leaned on dramatic images, but this one, numbered 49 in its series, relies on words alone: a block of text with no soldier, flag or illustration. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee issued posters like it in the early years of the war, when Britain still depended on volunteers, since conscription did not arrive until 1916. The appeal rests on protecting the women at home, the mothers, wives and sisters whose safety it presents as the stake in the fight. The color lithograph was printed by Straker Brothers in London.
