Rather than a general appeal to duty, this 1917 poster speaks to the viewer directly with the line "Volunteer, and choose your own branch of the service," which let a prospective recruit feel he had a say in where he would serve. Arthur N. Edrop drew the bearded figure of Uncle Sam, the national personification that recruiters leaned on heavily after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917. The American Lithographic Co. of New York printed it for the Recruiting Committee of the Mayor's Committee on National Defense, a city-level effort to fill the ranks.
