Uncle Sam is the central figure here, asked to "keep the stars shining," a line that echoes the service flags many families displayed in their windows during the war. Dated 1919, the poster appeared after the armistice, when the army was shrinking and still needed volunteers for peacetime service. Its pitch is practical: the Quartermaster Corps, which handled supplies, clothing and transport, offered a young man the chance to become a "business soldier" with a one- or three-year enlistment. John W. Sheeres's lithograph shows how recruiting art of the period still leaned on wartime patriotism while selling a steady job.
