Enlist in a proud profession" frames nursing as a patriotic calling. The U.S. Public Health Service, part of the Federal Security Agency, issued this 1943 poster to recruit for the newly created Cadet Nurse Corps. Congress set up that program the same year to train young women at no cost in exchange for service in civilian hospitals, when wartime demand for nurses far outpaced supply. Artist Edmundson's design reflects the federal home-front posters that tied women's work to the war effort. Although the catalog subject headings name the Army Nurse Corps, the poster promotes the civilian cadet program.
