Uncle Sam points straight out of this poster, and the caption "I want you in the Navy and I want you now" leaves little room for doubt. The design first ran in the July 6, 1916, preparedness issue of the New York weekly *Leslie's*, during the national debate over expanding the armed forces before the United States entered the war in April 1917. This color lithograph, printed by the Western Litho. Co. of Los Angeles around 1917, shows how recruiting images were reprinted and redistributed as the country moved toward war.
