A 1917 Navy recruiting poster ties enlistment to the sinking of the Lusitania, the British liner torpedoed by a German submarine off Ireland in May 1915, with about 1,200 lives lost. Its title, "When you fire remember this," asks viewers to carry that loss into the gunnery of the coming war, and the lifeboat and rescue imagery puts the human cost at the center. Cartoonist W. A. Rogers made the design as the United States moved toward entry into the war.
