This 1917 color lithograph urges viewers to "Man the guns of the Navy" and "Get in the game," with the line "This gun is over there" likely echoing the title of George M. Cohan's song "Over There," published that same year as the United States entered the First World War. The poster was later overprinted with the address of a U.S. Navy recruiting station on Second Avenue near 59th Street in New York City, which shows how such images were reused for local recruiting. Posters like this helped the Navy build its wartime ranks by presenting service as sporting, patriotic and exciting.
