The slogan "Don't read American history - make it!" sets this lithograph apart from the many recruiting posters on the board. Illustrator James Montgomery Flagg, best known for his Uncle Sam "I Want You" image, produced it for the Navy, and the H.C. Miner Lithograph Company of New York printed it in 1917. That year the United States entered the First World War, and the Navy sought to expand its ranks quickly, so posters like this one were displayed at recruiting stations to draw young men into service. The message ties enlistment to national pride and the chance to take part in history rather than simply study it.
